Hi there. My name is Zander and I am proud to say that I teach Global History at The Young Women's Leadership School of Astoria. I was born in the south but I have always had an affinity for city life, so after I graduated college I moved to Brooklyn (one block from where Biggie attended preschool! I was living the dream!).
I love music, film, puns, and traveling. I lived in England for a semester while studying abroad. The most fascinating country that I have visited is Morocco. Places that I would like to travel to in the near future include: Istanbul, Berlin, Barcelona, Buenas Aires, and Montreal.
I love teaching global history at TYWLS because I am given the freedom to incorporate project-based learning within my classroom. Students in my class know that the purpose of studying history is not to be able to memorize endless facts from the past. Students should not leave my classroom resembling walking textbooks. Instead, students need to understand that history can be used as a tool for better or for worse. It is my students' job to leave the classroom as critical thinkers who can discern biases in texts and use their skills to make their own arguments and conclusions based on sound evidence. Studying history is not about regurgitating sterile information. Studying history is about learning to think for yourself and communicating your beliefs with conviction.
