6.20.13 As far as I know, Regents scores are not in...
Hey Y'all,
I have gotten a slew of emails asking about Regents scores. If I could give a score to the city for the timely nature of the scoring- I would give it a NY- as in, we have Not Yet received the scores because teachers throughout the city are still grading. I could be wrong, but as far as I know the scores will be in Monday, but that could possibly be delayed. If you do find out, please let me know- because I am as in the dark as you are...
On a positive note, I'm sure all of y'all did fine and have nothing to worry about. I am more than happy to read your emails of inquiry and respond to them, but just know that I am not withholding any information.
I am ready to sign yearbooks.
Have a great weekend.

5.17.2013 It all starts and ends in the subway!
Thanks to all the students who came to the 92Y talk the other night! It was a very special experience for me.
Also, look who I found as I exited the subway that night on Greenpoint Ave- Jason Alexander, the same person we just saw speak so eloquently on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict!
5.10.2013 Homework this weekend, due Monday. Read selection from Cornel West, develop 4 thick questions to prepare for the Socratic Seminar on Tuesday.
"To the left, To the left, a picture of Lawrence and Dr. Cornel West in the box To the left."
- Z-eyonce
Dr. West is a very interesting thinker/intellectual that you should be aware of. I'm pretty sure that you will be reading him in Greg's U.S. history class next year. He has some pretty thought provoking ideas regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that I want you to mull over before the Socratic Seminar.
Remember, I will be playing Munich in its entirety after school on Monday right after school. Feel free to bring popcorn.

4.29.2013 SATURDAY REGENTS ALLEGIANCE CLASS!
Hey everyone, I have created a new Regents Prep page on my beloved Weebly. I have made a tentative schedule of the themes/content that will be analyzed (not covered!) on the next 6 consecutive Saturdays. If you feel that you have some historical blind spots, I would make it a priority to come to the Saturdays that you may need extra guidance. Many of you need to come to all of the dates. I imagine that each Saturday will look like this:
11:00-12:00 Lesson
12:00-1:00 Thesis/Writing Workshop. Use notes to help outline a thematic essay/DBQ
1:00-1:30 Take practice Regents Multiple Choice
1:30-2:00 Go over multiple Choice answers
May 4: Ancient Civilizations/ Social Sciences/Belief Systems
May 11: Middle Ages/Renaissance
May 18: Reformation/Colombian Exchange/Age of Exploration
May 25: Scientific Revolution/Enlightenment/French Revolution
June 1: Industrial Revolution/Imperialism/World War I
June 8: World War II/Cold War/Independence Movements
Your Regents is on Thursday June 13th at 9:15 AM. Afterward we will all go to Chuck E. Cheese on me.
Mark your Gregorian, Julian, and yes even French Revolutionary calendars.

4.28.2013
Here is a clip from "Munich", a Spielberg film that came out about 6 years ago. The film is tracks members of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, in a series of counter-terrorist activities after the Palestinian group Black September massacred 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team in 1973. Here is some good dialogue where an Israeli and a Palestinian are candid about their views on the conflict. If I recall correctly the Israeli, played by Eric Bana, is pretending to be a German communist unaffiliated with the Israeli cause.

3.22.2013 Tolstoy and how to beat the DBQ Blues!
“Spring is the time of plans and projects.”
― Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
Take it from Tolstoy! We are on the cusp of finishing our research and I have decided to give you a DBQ over spring break. If you are stressed out about it- DON'T. All I am asking is for you to take 2 hours of the 264 hours of your spring break to sit down and write an essay. Try to time yourself and see if you can pace yourself to complete the assignment in a reasonable chunk of time. This will be due on April 3. You have 11 days! Email me with any possible questions:

If you are having trouble finding good primary sources for your project, don't fret! Below is the link for the motherload site for primary sources. I have attached a link to the "Cold War" page, but if you take a gander to the left you will see a menu for a bunch of topics. For example, if your country is Vietnam, you can look for the link on the left that is titled "Asia since 1900", and you can navigate to find a plethora of sources that pertain to Vietnam's role in the Cold War. Enjoy! Also, for making your inquiry so much easier with this site- You're Welcome!

Hi everyone! I am very pleased with all of your progress on the research yesterday. In order to guide you with your understanding of your case study I have added a page where I can post film clips/songs/book recommendations that you may find helpful. Navigate my site and find the last page posted, "The A.V. Club" (this stands for Audio-Visual club, which is an homage to the newspaper The Onion's A.V. Club). Enjoy!

3.9.13 (afternoon) Stalin was such a jerk.
I just found this very short primary source while planning. I found it amusing.
Top secret
Dear Comrade Stalin:
You have been so rude as to summon my wife to the telephone and use bad language. Although she had told you that she was prepared to forget this, the fact nevertheless became known through her to Zinoviev and Kamenev. I have no intention of forgetting so easily what has been done against me, and it goes without saying that what has been done against my wife I consider having been done against me as well. I ask you, therefore, to think it over whether you are prepared to withdraw what you have said and to make your apologies, or whether you prefer that relations between us should be broken off.[1]
Respectfully yours,
Lenin

3.9.13 Cold War Unit Update
Student-led conference day was gangbusters! Parents, it was great seeing you again! If you were not able to make it, please e-mail me ([email protected]) so we can make a phone/in-person appointment with your daughter regarding her progress.
Students- I have updated my Cold War unit page if you are missing any of the resources that we have been working with in class. You can thank one of your peers for sending me a photo of each of the correct Animal Farm/Primary Source pairs that were congruent. Now it is your job to tell me what is important about the two sources in tandem. I chose each pair for a very specific reason, and I want you to discern the significance. What is Orwell saying about the Russian Revolution? How do the narratives of the Russian Revolution/Animal Farm stray from the original message of Marx's/Old Major's dream? Please e-mail me if you need any help with the analysis.
I'm very proud of all of you this week! I gave you some fairly difficult college-level primary sources and you persevered, albeit frustrated, and made very thoughtful conclusions.
We are on the cusp of beginning the Cold War inquiry into our driving question- Is the Cold War over? You have created definitions for communism and capitalism based on the primary sources I have given you- now you will work in your groups to apply what you know to your specific case study- North Korea, East Germany, Vietnam, Cuba, China, Russia, (possibly Venezuela? Nicaragua? Let me know if you are interested in exploring the former since Chavez just passed.)
Speaking of Chavez, here is a quasi-obituary/book review from my favorite magazine, The Economist:
http://www.economist.com/news/books-and-arts/21573084-stimulating-biography-great-showman-and-bad-president-who-died-aged-58
I will see you all on Monday. Please make sure you have finished Animal Farm. I hope you enjoyed it.

3.2.13 Two articles in the NY Times relevant to Global
Here is an interesting article about new Holocaust research coming to light. Historians and researchers had assumed that there had been only 7,000 concentration camps, ghettos, and labor camps set up buy the Nazis. After 12 years of research the number has climbed to a staggering 42,500.

2.18.13 New Unit: Is the Cold War over?
Last Friday we concluded our unit on World War II with the debut of the TYWLBECA FILM FESTIVAL, in which we watched all of the documentaries that the students wrote/directed/produced. This coming Friday we will be launching into our new unit that will explore the theme of political systems as we research the relevance of the Cold War in today's geopolitical climate.
We will spend first week of the unit building understandings of communism/totalitarianism by reading George Orwell's Animal Farm. Students will read every night and come into class ready to pick apart primary source documents that complement Orwell's allegory.
Once we complete the novel, students will break off into groups to commence research on a country of their choosing that was a key player in the Cold War. Each group will have the task of creating a memo addressed to the UN that assesses their country's current geopolitical standing. Each group will also be responsible for leading a 20 minute discussion with the rest of the class regarding the role of their country during the Cold War.
The culminating projects for the unit will include a Socratic Seminar and an in-class thematic essay. Rubrics for all of the assessments can be found on the Cold War Unit Page.
I am very exciting about embarking on this new project! Please email me if you have any questions/concerns: [email protected]
