The Scope of the Project....
Step 1: Read the Entry Document.
Step 2: Choose a subject and conduct your interview.
Step 3: Combine all of your group's primary source interviews into a master google doc.
Step 4: Annotate your interview, as well as the rest of your group's based on the rubric for Discern.

Example of my interview with my father annotated below:

Step 5: Based on questions that were raised in your annotations, research 3 sources in order to gain further understanding of your subject's event.
Do NOT use wikipedia. I recommend using the databases available from the New York Public Library's website. To gain access if you do not have a card, I was nice enough to provide you with my own personal information. Also, I included a step by step guide to access the databases that are available to me from the Queens College library. You need to write the complete source on the left column on your research log, and you need to make annotations on the right side.

Step 6: Now that you have background to the event you are researching, you are adequately prepared to analyze a photograph from your subject.
If it is not possible to retrieve a photograph, you may research to find a photo from the same country/time period as your subject.
1. Identify the content of the visual: This is an old photograph taken in 1969 during my Dad’s time in the Philippines. The image displays 3 American young adult males, 5 Filipina young adult females, and a baby girl and a slightly older boy. There appears to be a figure behind the older boy.
2. Note the emotional elements:
Based on the joyous faces, this appears to be a social occasion.
3. Determine the purpose of the visual:
This primary source is a simply snapshot of day to day life for Air Force officers in the Philippines. This is from a personal scrapbook so I do not believe that there is any propaganda that is being pushed, but one can never be entirely sure.
4. Analyze of the visual:
The purpose of this photograph is to capture a moment in time when American officers were socializing with citizens of the Philippines. The fashions that are displayed by the females look very Western. This is most likely due to the fact that the United States has had ties in the Philippines since 1898. The setting appears to be a home, rather than a sterile army base. The content of the photo reveals that while some Americans may have not mingled with the inhabitants outside of their bases, many were interested in socializing with the local population. While there were some extremists who wished to dispose of the American presence violently, there were locals who voluntarily wished to engage with the American foreigners.

Step 7: Analyze your sources (primary and secondary) in relation to a map of your region.
Does the geography of your region affect the narrative of your primary source? How do the topography, climate, diversity, or relationship/proximity to other countries factor into your previous analysis?

1. Use the key to determine scale: Based on the scale on the bottom left, it appears that the Philippines is approximately 800 miles from Vietnam. This close proximity sheds light on why the U.S. would utilize its bases in the Philippines as a strategic vantage point in the War with Vietnam.
2.Notice the latitude and longitude lines and numbers: Latitude liens indicate the distance north or south of the equator. Longtiude liens show distance east or west from the Prime Meridian. Latiude and longitude are measured in degrees. Since the Philippines falls between 0 and 20 degrees latitude, you can infer that the climate is very humid and tropical.
3. Identify bodies of water and physical features: The South China Sea is the body of water that separates Vietnam and the Philippines. Most likely the South China Sea is flown over by air of used as a way to connect the Philippines to Vietnam by sea.
4. Identify political areas: Although this is a modern map, it is apparent that Saigon, the former capital of South Vietnam is now named Ho Chi Minh City, the name of the North Vietnamese communist leader. This indicates that the communist north actually defeated the west in Vietnam. Vietnam also borders China, another one of the few communist countries in the world today.
Step 8: Create a timeline of your group's events.
Through your analysis, can you detect any cause and effect between the events?
What patterns do you notice between the dates and your previous analysis and research?

Step 9: Synthesize all of your Data for your Zine Chapter
Step 10: Each member of your group needs to contribute a piece of artistic expression for the Zine.
This could be a drawing, a poem, a comic strip... Ask me about other options!

Step 11: Finalize you "spread" for your chapter.
Where do you want the visuals to go? The Map? The Timeline? How are you organizing your synthesized writing for your chapter?

Step 12: Put Zine together and PUBLISH!
